Adam Weinstock
and Creative Concept Productions:

When
the Provincetown Naked Boys arrived at the Crown &
Anchor Inn on June24, trouble was waiting.
A few years ago, I was in P-Town with
my partner and we had heard of a controversial show
playing at the Crown and Anchor called Naked Boys
Singing. Well, with a name like that, I insisted we
go see it while it was still running. The town was
trying to shut the show down calling it an
"pornographic show" when in reality it was no
different than any other art form that may have
nudity. I was glad we got a chance to see it. The
very first song, Gratuitous Nudity set the stage for
what was an amazing show. During that first number,
they pretty much tell you to look, gawk, stare,
whatever you need to do, and get it out of the way
because the nudity was not the main attraction. I
didn't believe that because I was there to GAWK!
These guys were all hot and all in a different way.
From the thin little twink to the hairy daddyish
type, there was something for everyone.
By the second number, I was losing my focus on the
hot men and being taken in by the incredible
singing! By the time the third song had started, I
had forgotten they were naked altogether and you
will too.
We are fortunate to have Naked Boys Singing on its
way to Key West. I had a chance to interview the
producer Adam Weinstock via e-mail and this is what
he tells P&E about the show.
Tell
ma a little about Naked Boys Singing.
Well they are actually Naked and Yes they actually
Sing. This show is very charming but can be viewed
otherwise to a lot of people. They don't know what
to expect. They expect the worst, so they stay away
if they are not educated as to the true nature of
the show. It is a delightful celebration of
humanity.
What better way to celebrate anything than with
nudity! What was the inspiration for Naked Boys?
...to sell tickets and entertain people? But I
really see it as a light hearted musical response to
the Vagina Monologues phenomenon. Naked Boys
Singing has great appeal to both men and women. My
mother and my married brother both loved it.
If my mother was still around she would INSIST I
take her to it! When was the first time Naked Boys
were seen singing (not including all the queens
singing I Will Survive in the shower.)
Los Angeles March 19th 1998 and since then it has
played all over the world.
Has there ever been an "embarrassing moment" on
stage?
The show is strictly legitimate and the performers
all professional. It is a Musical Comedy review. It
does celebrate nudity , but it is not sexual. There
are no "embarrassing moments" on stage. Maybe in the
dressing room.
How do I get access to the dressing room?
What the audiences get to see is a beautifully
constructed world-wide appreciated top notch show.
The shows creator Robert Schrock will be directing
in Key West and he insists on nothing less.
Explain to our readers about the controversy in
Provincetown and what the outcome was.
In Provincetown some people wanted to make things
tough for the venue "The Crown and Anchor." They
started an avalanche which could not be stopped. No
one is sure who "complained." Certainly not the sold
out audiences. We had to have a town hearing. I
suppose it was on the artistic merit of the show.
Quite ridiculous for Provincetown where there was
nudity in a play performed in Town Hall just a year
prior. The Crown and Anchor and all the performers
in town were incredibly supportive. Provincetown had
to rewrite some very old bylaws. Nicole Kidman was
nude on Broadway that same season. Since my
production, the Provincetown Community theater was
able to do its production of the musical HAIR.
Sounds like Provincetown and Key West are very
similar with their over-controlling town government.
Tell us what we can expect to see at the show.
17 beautifully staged musical numbers sung by some
very professional and hunky men. The voices will be
supreme and the show will be Off-Broadway quality.
There are even some of the NYC members in the Key
West cast, plus a straight man . I'll never tell
which. Oh and of course there will be Gratuitous
Nudity...which is incidentally the name of the first
song.
I sure love Gratuitous Nudity... and the song too!
When and where is the show paying?
Naked Boys Singing is playing at the Waterfront
Playhouse. The show opens on March 8th and runs
through April 1st. More information and ticket sales
information can be found at
www.waterfrontplayhouse.com
Fortunately, I already bought my tickets. Right up
front of course! Now for the most important
question. How do I get to interview each boy
individually and in private?
Well they are performers and I am sure they would
all be willing to perform. If their union allows
them to do solo work. Just let me know which one
you fall in love with, and I'll set up an
interview...in return for a glowing review.
That can be arranged! It's cheaper than a private
dance at any of our local bars! And the odds are
better I will find a gay one!
By the way...I can be requested as well
As long as you aren't the straight one.... Call me!
